How does an expression pedal work?

i have an digitech rp90 effects board and my expression pedal just stopped working out of the blue. i wanted to improvise to fix it but I dont know how it works other than theres a small lens under the pedal and a circle peice on the bottom of the pedal above the lens. how do they connect?
