Can you DYE anything with food coloring?

I have a mesh textured like canopy I would like to dye black, its currently a light pink color, can I dye it with food coloring, iv been looking for a big black canopy forever and can never seem to find one, so I decided to improvise. How long does it need to soak? Will one bottle work or do I need to use the whole bottle iv never dyed anything with food coloring so im not sure what im doing here, any help would be help full thanks
