Can I upgrade ranged weapons with kills from melee weapons in Fable 3?

Like if I kill two hundred evil enemies with The Love Sword while I have Holy Vengeance Pistol equipped will I still get the requirement bar for the pistol, which is to kill two hundred evil enemies, to fill up? Or do I need to actually get the kills with the pistol for the bar to fill up? Or say, what if I use magic to kill the evil enemies while the pistol is equipped, will the kills still count towards unlocking the requirement?
